Portrait of Kevin

Kevin Gilheany is a maritime industry consultant and professional speaker. As a retired Coast Guard officer with over twenty years of service, a business owner and certified marine surveyor and auditor, Kevin’s experience makes him a uniquely qualified consultant and speaker on the topics of leadership, maritime safety and security, and regulatory compliance.

During his Coast Guard career, Kevin gained experience aboard vessels at sea as well as inland waterways, and was board certified for Coast Guard command afloat. In 1998 Kevin became a marine inspector at one of the largest Marine Safety Offices (MSOs) in the country, where he conducted inspections on all types of vessels from barges to steamships, both in the U.S. and overseas. As a training officer, Kevin was responsible for training and qualifying other Coast Guard marine inspectors. In the wake of 9/11, he was one of the first marine inspectors to lead armed port security boardings of commercial vessels at sea during the initial development of the Coast Guard’s port security boarding procedures. For his service he was awarded the Global War to Terrorism Service Medal and the Department of Transportation 9/11 Ribbon.

Upon retirement from the Coast Guard in 2003, Kevin joined a leading marine survey firm before leaving to form Maritime Compliance International, LLC in July of 2004. Through his company, Kevin helps clients get into compliance, and stay in compliance over the long-term, by getting it right the first time and determining what he refers to as, “the optimum level of compliance.” Many high-profile clients throughout the U.S. and overseas, such as the City of New York and Cargill, Inc, rely upon Kevin for his leadership and services.

In 2005, at the request of Coast Guard Sector San Diego, Kevin developed a course entitled “Maritime Security of Enforcement Personnel.” Since then Kevin has been called upon to conduct maritime security training for Coast Guard inspectors, on a contract basis, at seven different Coast Guard commands across the country.

In 2007, upon recommendation of certain Coast Guard officers, Kevin was appointed as an Adjunct Instructor of Maritime and Border Security at Tulane University’s Homeland Security Studies Program. In fall of 2007, Kevin developed and taught Tulane’s first Maritime Security course to graduate and undergraduate students.

Kevin is a member of the National Speakers Association and a contributing columnist to "Marine News" magazine.
